Dave's Demo Format - Or How to do a Dynamite Demo (part One of three parts)

Thanks for the comments on the "Lucky Seven" Induction. Before I get into the basics of the induction I'd like to address Robert's comments about doing a Demo. Robert, since you only have a limited time frame to work with I'll tip some great work on giving Demos with what you already know and then add in the "lucky Seven." The "lucky Seven" Only has seven words so it's easy to learn. I wasn't trying to come up with an "Induction in so many words - Induction" it just kind of worked out that way.

Remember that everything in these posts are MOATT (my opinion at this time) and works for me. If it didn't work, I would even bother posting it here. I've used so many techniques that just didn't really work or didn't work well. So if this stuff doesn't work for you, I'd like to know about it so that something can change so that it does work. Teaching is always the ultimate test for a technique.

Before you even think about doing a Demo, you must have some kind of format to follow. Ask yourself these questions:

    1. How should I look? -dress casual? formal? hip? trendy? top hat and tails? biz as usual?
    2. What character am I playing? Myself? A made up name/ stage name? A great hypnotist from time passed? Someone with super powers? All of these are valid if done properly.
    3. How much time do you have?
    4. What is your audience expecting?
    5. Who is your audience? College, kids, corporate, service groups?
    6. Whats in it for you the hypnotist? Are you generating interest? do you want clients? Do you want shows? Define your goal and you have a better chance of achieving it.

    My basic format is this:

    1. Introduction - opening
    2. Tell them what to expect and what not to expect or Setting up expectation.
    3. Find the best guests (not subjects) to work with in the demo (suggestibility tests)
    4. explain about hypnosis
    5. Give a group Demo
    6. Pick a few guests and do some individual routines (this is a great place for the lucky seven)
    7. Demo what you do in a session or how you can help them - sell what you are selling
    8. Give them something to think about
    9. Close and collect contact info or BOTR sales/ giveaways

This takes you from beginning to end in a orderly fashion and puts in plenty of time to do a great demo.

It is really important that you define what you want out of the demo. If all you want is to practice giving demos..... that's OK. But, You can do so much more. You can gain clients for a private practice, get work doing shows, sell CD's and books at the BOTR, gain names for your mailing list, and plug upcoming events that you are participating in like WHD. Or Ormonds Bday celebration.

Don't sell yourself short in this step. Nothing is worse than saying .....well I don't have anything to sell so I won't put anything in the BOTR. Or I don't collect names yet .... Trust me.....if you want to make a living doing hypnosis then you are going to have to embrace these areas.

Plus ...... you can earn a good living just doing demos and selling some CDs and books. You can earn even more if you produce these CDs and books yourself, but you don't have to sell your own stuff. There are tons on good material that you can include. If you are at a loss of things to sell, just contact me and I'll let you carry some of mine to sell on consignment so there is no excuse.

A word about BOTR sales (back of the room.) You don't have to sell things in the back of the room. It is my opinion, however, that if you talk about an exciting subject, one that can help people in so many different ways, and then don't give them some kind of tool to help them out other than the talk, you are doing these folks a disservice. No one has to buy anything. But not to offer any tools to help out is not to their advantage. Service the customer. The worst thing that could happen is that they go to the internet and buy something because you did a great demo - they were really interested - but - you didn't have anything to offer. You loose - they loose - they may buy something that is crap and then say " Hypnosis doesn't work" The scenario looks like this ......

You do a great demo ..... people are excited ... some say they want to see you but you didn't bring any cards .. so they want to leave you their number and write on a piece of paper because you don't have a mailing list. They want some more info but you don't have any to sell or give away. So .... they go to the internet and google hypnosis and a multitude of rip off products sold on Ebay for a dollar and buy some. The stuff is crap and they don't call you or come to see you because they now think .... despite your great demo ..... hypnosis doesn't work and they've been taken (by those ebay folks but you are now guilty by association.)

Not that this has ever happened to me ......................... ;-)

A great demo can be such an asset in your arsenal of marketing tools. I Hypnotize practically anyone , anywhere, and anytime. When it is appropriate. Just some simple suggestibility tests do nicely and I'll reveal more in part two.

PS Another comment was on what is a hybrid induction. My definition of a hybrid is an induction that uses multiple techniques, some physical, some mental, to produce hypnosis. A progressive relaxation and an Eye Fixation are not hybrids. The Elman borders on a Hybrid. the F-REM (forced Rem state) induction and the "lucky seven" are both hybrids. Hopes this helps out.

Thank you Dave! #6 is where I could use the assistance. I have never "performed" any type of show, and I don't want to bore everyone going thru a normal hypnotherapy session. I figure I will have about 7-9 minutes for this part after going thru the introduction and group demo. Also, should I take questions at the end? Thanks again Dave.
